Project:[TH-0358] 143rd Street, Antioch to Switzer
Description: The construction of 143rd Street from 147 meters west of the centerline of Switzer Road to 122 meters west of the centerline of Antioch Road, and the construction of Switzer Road from 216 meters south of the centerline of 143rd Street to 405 meters north of the centerline of 143rd Street. 143rd Street will be constructed as a four-lane, divided thoroughfare with a general cross section width of four 3.85 meter driving lanes and a 4.88 meter median. Left turn lanes will be constructed at each leg of 143rd Street and Switzer Road intersection. Left turn lanes will also be constructed on 143rd Street at the intersections of Grant, England, and Benson. The project includes construction of a bridge over Tomahawk Creek 60.7 meters east of Grant. A 3.00 meter bike and pedestrian trail will be constructed on the north side of 143rd Street. A 1.5 meter sidewalk will be constructed on the south side of 143rd Street, and both sides of Switzer Road. The project includes construction of roadway transitions, storm drainage, street lighting, retaining walls, restoration, and other items incidental to the street construction.
Project Limits: 143rd Street from west of Antioch Road to 400 feet west of Switzer Road, and Switzer Road from 144th Street to 400 feet north of 141st Street.
Traffic Impacts: During the first phase of construction, lasting from approximately March 15, 2004 to November 15, 2004, 143rd Street between Antioch Road and Switzer Road will be closed to all traffic. The westbound detour route is from 143rd and Antioch, northbound on Antioch Road to 135th Street, westbound on 135th Street to Switzer Road, and southbound on Switzer Road to 143rd Street.

8/31/2005The project is substantially complete. The contractor will be correcting a drainage problem at Benson this fall. The City is preparing a contract for median tree planting, to be performed this fall.
7/8/2005Surface work is complete less a low spot on Benson that is ponding water and will be fixed by the contractor. All of the restoration is complete. Permanent signing and pavement markings are scheduled to be completed next Monday. A punch list of repairs has been generated and given to the contractor.
7/1/2005All sprinkler systems through out the project have been accepted. Sod that was placed prior to yesterday has also been accepted. Due to the rain this week, the asphalt surface will continue Tuesday or as the weather allows. Sod has been placed at the north and south ends of the bridge with some seed work scheduled for Tuesday west of the bridge on the south side of the road. Permanent Signing is 99% complete. Lay out for Permanent pavement markings is complete with the work scheduled to start tomorrow and continue next week following the asphalt work. A punch list is being developed at this time.
6/25/2005Surface Asphalt is scheduled to start Monday morning. The sprinkler systems have started to be accepted through out the project with the various tracts as well as the sod that has been laid. Paver brick at the south end of the bridge is scheduled to start Monday.
6/18/2005The Corral Rail is complete. Final grade work has started on the north and south sides of the bridge. The weather station has been installed and will be activated after the hand rail is installed. The rest of the sod is scheduled for Monday with the seed work to follow after the additional paver brick is installed on the south side of the bridge. Damaged curb is being removed and replaced in preparation for the final lift of asphalt in the next 2 weeks.
6/13/2005The sidewalk portion of the Corral Rail has been placed with the steel and form work in place. The contractor plans to place the rail portion as soon as the weather allows. The rest of the work will continue when the weather allows.
6/3/200595% of the sod is placed with the rest of the sod scheduled for next week. All of the planned sprinkler work is complete with some additional work required along the Willow Brooke subdivision. The Corral Rail at the south end of the bridge is started and planned to be complete next week. Completed the 15 day burn test on the street lighting and in the process of final acceptance.
5/27/2005Sprinkler work is 99% complete for the project as planned. Sod placement is 80% complete. The Native and Fescue seed work is complete. All of the sidewalk is placed less the area at the south end of the bridge where a sidewalk retaining wall is to be placed. The wrought iron fencing at Willow Brooke along with the handrail for the north and south ends of the bridge next Tuesday.
5/23/2005Sprinkler work is 90% complete through out the entire project. Rip Rap work at the south end of bridge is 95% complete. The storm sewer work the south end of the bridge is complete. Grading at the south end of the bridge along with permanent seeding should be completed this week. Sod is scheduled to start being laid mid week.
5/13/2005Completed all electrical work, backfilled sidewalk, and built grade for the bike path Phase III. Sprinkler work continues along Phase I at Brooke Wood. Additional storm sewer work is scheduled to start at the south end of the bridge Monday. Opened Phase III (Switzer north of 143rd street to 140th street) on Friday May 13th, at 9:05a.m.
5/7/200580% of the final grade work for Phase I and II is complete. The seed work in all of the medians has been completed as well as seed work at the schools along 143rd street. Street lighting for Phase III is 95% complete with all of the sidewalk being placed. The final installation of sprinklers has been started at Brooke Hollow working east. Additional storm sewer work at the south end of the bridge is scheduled to start mid next week, with the rest of the work in this area to follow as soon as possible.
4/29/2005Tops to storm sewer structures have been placed along with the placement of some sidewalk. Median is backfilled and electrical work has started Phase III. Started forming sidewalk ramps and graded for bike path Phase III. Grade work for sod along Phase I and II continues with the final installation of sprinklers scheduled to begin Monday.
4/22/2005All base asphalt Phase III is placed. Median curb has been placed and backfilled, along with the high back curb Phase III. Rip Rap rock has been placed at the north end of the bridge. Grade work for sod and seed is underway through out Phase I and II. Tops for storm sewer structures Phase III is scheduled to start Monday along with electrical work.
4/16/2005Phase III is 99% complete with all of the base asphalt scheduled to be completed Monday afternoon following the asphalt bike path along the north side of 143rd street. Median curb is also scheduled to be placed Monday Phase III. Sidewalk have started to be filled as well as final grading for sod along Phase I and II.
4/11/2005Soil treated, installed drain pipe, laid base rock, and curb Phase III. Stripped sidewalk retaining wall and started grouting at England and 143rd street. Backfilled all of the retaining walls through out Phase I and II. Laid base rock for bike paths and placed sidewalk Phase I and II.
4/1/2005The west stone retaining wall is built along with adjusting the height of the brick pillar at tract 14. Grade is being cut for sidewalk, with sidewalk placement scheduled to start Monday morning. Soil treatment Phase III is 80% complete and is scheduled to be completed Monday. 90% of the sidewalk ramps have been completed with the brick work. Electrical work and edge drains along with trimming grade Phase III for rock base is scheduled for next week.
3/25/2005Grade work Phase III is scheduled to continue next as weather allows. The west stone retaining wall is approximately 50% complete. The sidewalk retaining wall at the southwest corner of Switzer and 143rd street is scheduled to be placed Monday. Staking and string line for the bike path and sidewalk along Phase I and II is scheduled to continue next week.
3/19/2005Phase III is mostly rough graded and curb stakes are being set. Final grading for soil treatment as well as soil treatment is scheduled for the coming week. The east stone retaining wall at Benson is built with the west wall in the process of being built. String line continues to be set through out Phase I and II. The medians of Phase I and II is being built to final grade in preparation for seed.
3/12/2005All storm sewer has been placed Phase III. Clearing and grubbing is complete. Grading work to start this week Phase III. The stone retaining wall on the east side of Benson is 30% complete. Sidewalk ramp systems continue to be built through out Phase I and II. Grade work for sidewalks and bike pathways continues along Phase I. Storm sewer work is scheduled to be completed at the north and south ends of the bridge this coming week.
3/5/2005Phase III (Switzer from south of 140th street to north side of 143rd street) was closed on scheduled 3-1-05. The old roadway has been removed and clearing and grubbing has started. Storm sewer and road staking is scheduled for next week. Excavated and placed sidewalk ramp systems through out Phase I and II, and will continue next week. Backfilling of the bridge area continued this week as will it continue through next week. Construction of the stone retaining walls at Benson has been started and will continue until they are complete.
2/25/2005All of wing walls have been placed for the bridge. Backfill work should continue next week as weather permits. Water One completed their relocation work across the bridge on the south side of 143rd street. Phase III of the project (Switzer Road -north of 143rd street to the south side of 140th street) is scheduled to close for construction Tuesday March 1. This Phase of work is not scheduled to be re-opened until the middle of May this year. Additionally, 141st street at Switzer will be closed to east and west traffic for the same period of time.
2/18/2005The warning siren was relocated Tuesday. The signal beacons for Phase I and II are completely installed and operational. Started backfill operations at the northwest corner of the bridge and placed the lower wing wall section at the southeast corner of the bridge.
2/14/2005All of the street lighting for Phase I has been completed. Installation of the signal beacons for Phase I and II has been started. The relocation of the warning siren is scheduled for this week. Bridge work will continue as the weather allows.
2/7/2005All street light poles for Phase I have been assembled and stood. The wiring of the poles will start as weather permits. Placed the footing for the southeast wing wall. Backfill work will continue at both ends of the bridge as well as concrete work as weather allows.
1/28/2005Street lighting is approximately 65% complete. Wiring and pole standing should start next week. Placed the footing and the lower section of the northwest wing wall. Excavated and placed the footing for a retaining wall at the east side of Benson. Excavation for the southeast wing wall footing is scheduled to start next week. All work is weather dependant.
1/24/2005KCP&L re-established the overhead power over the bridge. Some backfill has been done from Grant to England. Street light work is 50% complete from Switzer to Antioch. Bridge work is scheduled to continue this week with work on the northwest wing wall.
1/14/2005The contractor plans to continue backfilling medians and street light work next week from Switzer to Antioch as the weather permits.
1/4/2005Median curb and the noses from Grant to England were placed last week. Also installed the last run of edge drain over the bridge on the south side of the road. Due to forecasted weather for this week, APAC plans to remove the insulating blankets with no other work this week.
12/20/2004143rd street from Antioch to Switzer was open to traffic, 1 lanes for east and westbound this afternoon at 3:11p.m, including all side streets and left turn bays.
12/18/2004All of the base asphalt has been laid from Switzer to Antioch. Some median curb is lacking from west of Grant to England. This work will be scheduled when weather allows. Street lights have been stood and are burning at the Switzer intersection. Backfill work in the medians and out side curb is scheduled for next week. 143rd street from Switzer to Antioch is scheduled to be open to traffic Monday afternoon December 20th.
12/13/2004143rd street is paved from Antioch to just east of England. The bridge area from Grant to England has had soil treatment, edge drains and drainable rock laid. "B" curb is scheduled for this Wednesday. Street light poles have been installed in the south and west medians at Switzer. Base asphalt is scheduled for this Friday and Saturday.
11/22/2004Drainable base rock has been laid from Antioch to England. Curb and asphalt is scheduled for this week in the same area. Bridge work continues as well as electrical work at the Switzer intersection. 143rd street road closure has been extended to December 15 weather permitting.
11/17/2004Road drains and cutting final grade for rock base east of England is scheduled for this week. Backfilling the west side of the bridge with wing wall construction at the north and south ends of the bridge. Water One has relocated their line out of the roadway from England to the east side of the bridge. Phase II electrical work continues.
11/8/2004Storm sewer west of the bridge is scheduled this week along with backfilling the bridge. Wing walls will continue to be dug as well placed this week. Water One has made new pipe line connections at Benson and Antioch. Rough grade has been established from Antioch to England. Electrical work should start this week.
10/22/2004The bridge was put in place this week. Backfill work should start early next week along with wing wall construction. Water One is 70% complete with their relocation work east of the creek. Started cutting grade for soil stabilization east of the creek this week, and should continue next week along with spoil removal. Surveying and storm sewer work should start around the bridge area late next week.
10/15/2004KCP&L finished their relocation work at the north end of the bridge this week. Water One started their relocation work east of the creek this week and should continue through next week. Curb staking from Antioch west on the north side of 143rd street. Crane crew mobilized and is scheduled to start setting bridge sections this coming Tuesday.
10/8/200470% of the base asphalt has been laid from Switzer past Knox. KCP&L is working on getting the power lines out of the way for bridge work. Bridge work is scheduled to start Wednesday October 14th. Water One is scheduled to relocate their utility east of England starting Monday October 12 and could take up to 3 weeks.
10/1/2004Laid drainable base rock and outside curb from Switzer to just west of Grant. Placed the cap to the west bridge footing. Scheduled to finish curb, and start paving base asphalt next week, along with back filling the west bridge footing.
9/27/2004The base for the west bridge footing was placed last week. The cap is scheduled to be placed this week. Other items scheduled for this week are, trimming grade for drainable base rock, laying the base rock, electrical work Phase II, possible curb and base asphalt. Hydro-mulched and seeded Phase II as an erosion control procedure.
9/20/2004Placed the cap to the middle ConSpan footing. Switched the crew to its planned position to start work on the west footing. All Phase I storm sewer has been installed less the area around the bridge. Should continue to build the road east of Switzer along with the bridge work. Water One should start their relocation work East of England this week.
9/13/2004Placed the base for the middle bridge footing. The cap is scheduled to be placed this week. Storm sewer east of the creek will continue this week. Scheduled to cut grade for drainable base rock east of Switzer this week. Will continue to haul off spoils through out the week.
9/3/2004Completed the installation of edge drain west of the creek to Switzer, the east footing to the bridge in the creek area is complete. Plan to start the middle footing next week. The contractor plans to place tops to storm sewer structures Phase II next week. Storm sewer east of the creek should continue next week along with hauling off waste material. Scheduled to cut grade on treated soil next week and may lay drainable base rock.
8/30/2004Placed another 130' of the east bridge footing. Storm sewer work continues from Benson to Antioch, Soil treatment east of Switzer to Grant is 70% complete. Edge drains and underground electrical to start this week. Will complete soil treatment Monday. Continue to haul off waste material.
8/24/2004Started excavation and placement of bridge footings. 95% of curb has been placed with median noses Phase II. Soil treatment is scheduled for Phase I east of Switzer as soon as the weather permits. Storm sewer work east of the creek continues. Added additional erosion control measures in the creek area. Removal of waste material is an on going process.
8/16/2004The 143rd street and Switzer intersection was re-opened to traffic at 1:45p.m last Friday. Soil treat from Switzer to the creek is scheduled for this week as well as dowel on curb at the intersection. Excavation for bridge footings continues.
8/9/2004Temporarily relocated the creek for bridge construction, placed the first lift of asphalt on Phase II. Rough grading continues on both sides of the creek Phase I. Soil treatment is scheduled for next Monday from Switzer to 100 west of the creek. Backfill and asphalt continues this week as well as excavation for the bridge.
8/2/2004Rough grading and hauling off waste material continues on both sides of the creek as well as curb staking Phase I. The drainable road base and 90% of the curb has been placed Phase II. The wells at tract 45 should be abandoned today. Base asphalt for Phase II is scheduled to start this Thursday. Started excavation work in the creek for the bridge last Saturday.
7/26/2004Soil treatment for Phase II completed last week. Started cutting grade for underground electrical and road drains Phase II. Sprinklers at Brookwood were repaired last Thursday as well as relocated trees through out the project. Started curb staking Phase I from Switzer working east. Weather permitting, should start laying drainable road blanket late this week.
7/17/2004Completed all storm sewer work phase II. Started curb staking Phase II. Atmos Gas was required to relocate their line at additional stations due to sub-grade conflicts. Removed the temporary guy pole at the southwest corner of 143rd street and Switzer. Started storm sewer work east of the creek. The hauling off of waste material continues. Due to the Thursday night rains, final grading for soil treatment has been postponed until this coming Monday. Time Warner has started relocation work at Benson Phase I. Soil treatment is scheduled for the middle to late part of the coming week.
7/12/2004Utility relocation work continues. Completed storm sewer work Phase II last week. Grade work continues for Phase II as well as curb staking. Scheduled for soil treatment on the south leg of Switzer this Friday. Storm sewer work to start on the east side of the creek this week Phase I.
7/6/2004Utility relocation work continues as well as rough grading and storm sewer work as the weather permits. All of the storm sewer is in less a run at the western limits of 143rd street Phase II. Hydro-mulched borrow areas and the north and south sides of the creek. Storm sewer work should continue tomorrow if the weather allows.
6/28/2004Kansas Gas completed their relocation work at Benson and 142nd court, Time Warner, Atmos Gas and Water One still have relocation work to complete. The sanitary work in the creek area has been tested is done. Storm sewer between the creek and Switzer is in, started Phase II storm sewer work. Started removing undesirable soil (undercut) in the creek area. The undercut will continue this week as well rough grading and storm sewer work.
6/21/2004Utility work continues as weather permits. The sanitary relocation work should be cut over today which will complete the system. Storm sewer work continues Phase I and II. Staking and rough grading continues as weather allows.
6/12/2004Water One switched over the new line north of 143rd street on Switzer. Milled off the old asphalt road Phase II. Time Warner has started their relocation work in the area of Phase II. Rough grading and sanitary will continue as the weather allows.
6/7/2004The intersection of 143rd street and Switzer will be closed today and will remain closed through the summer. The 27" sanitary sewer line and manholes passed inspection last Friday. The contractor will continue with the 12" line this week. Storm sewer work continues, Water One crossed Switzer south of 141st street last week. Time Warner plans to relocate their utility this week. Rough grading continues east of England. Parks and Recreation removed trees from Brookhollow last week.
6/1/2004The Blue Valley fiber was switched over this weekend. Water One continues its relocation work and plans to cross Switzer south of 141st street this Thursday. Switzer road will be closed for the day to do this work. Additionally, next Monday, the intersection of Switzer and 143rd street will close next Monday, June 7 for construction and will re-open prior to school starting back up. The structures at tract 45 were demolished last week.
5/24/2004The installation of storm sewer and utility relocations continue. The Blue Valley fiber is scheduled to be spliced over this Memorial Day weekend, sanitary work will continue this week.
5/15/2004Storm sewer work was started last week and should continue this coming week. The sanitary relocation work should start this coming Monday. KCP&L cut the power and telephone line to tract 45 on Friday. All utilities are not abandoned to tract 45. Atmos Gas, Kansas Gas, Water One, and Time Warner are still in the progress of relocating their utilities.
5/10/2004Utility relocation work continues throughout the project. SBC has completed all of their relocation work and is scheduling the restoration work through the Rylie Company. The sprinkler main for Brookhollow was relocated last week. Tree relocation work for Brookhollow is scheduled for this Wednesday and Thursday. Epic plans to restore the sprinkler system for Brookwood this Thursday and Friday for Water One. Rough road grading was started last week and should continue this week along with storm sewer and sanitary work. All work is dependant on the weather.
4/26/2004Started clearing the area late last week where the new bridge is to be constructed in the creek. Utility relocation work continues through the project. Time Warner plans to do all of their splice work during the early morning hours to avoid as many interruptions as possible.
4/19/2004A&L Underground completed pulling in the 8" steel gas line last Friday afternoon. Magellan should begin to tie in the gas line this week. Milled off the old roadway last week. The various utility companies continue their relocation work. Sanitary work should start within the next 2 weeks. Tree clearing at the creek for the new bridge should start this week, weather permitting.
4/12/2004The Magellan gas relocation work east of Benson is approximately 45% complete. KCP&L is 90% complete, SBC is 50% complete, and Water One has just started their relocation work. The various utilities will continue to relocate this week. APAC plans to start the removals of the old road this week along with the possibility of some clearing work at the creek where the new bridge is to be built.
4/5/2004The various utilities continue to relocate out of the construction area to widen the road. 143rd street east of Switzer to Antioch was closed at 11:25 a.m last Thursday. Magellan Gas plans to start their directional boring of the gas line in the next few days. The contractor plans to work 12 hour days (7:00 a.m to 7:00 p.m) 7days a week. The estimated time is 10 days for this work.
3/29/2004The various utility companies continue relocation work throughout 143rd street. Signboards were set out last Friday advertising the closure of 143rd street east of Switzer to Antioch for the west and eastbound traffic. The road is scheduled to be closed for construction starting April 1, 2004.
3/22/2004Capital Electric started relocating KCP&L's high voltage late last week. The work will continue for the next 3 to 4 weeks, weather dependant. A public meeting has been scheduled for this project on Thursday March 25, 2004, at the Blue Valley Maintenance shop located at 6869 W. 153rd Street at 6:30 p.m.
3/15/2004Most of the trees identified for relocation have been marked. Utility relocation work should start by the end of the month to the first part of April dependant on the weather.
3/8/2004The project pre-construction conference will be held tomorrow. A public informational meeting date will be confirmed with the contractor, and then the mailings will be finalized.
3/3/2004Project construction awarded to APAC-Kansas, Inc. A pre-construction conference with the contractor and utilities will be held next week. A public informational meeting will be held shortly thereafter in the area, for residents and interested parties, to discuss the constuction and schedule.
5/3/2003Utility relocation work continues. The Rylie Co. completed pulling all of the cable required for splicing last Thursday. Due to supply issues, the sanitary relocation work has been delayed an additional 10 days. More clearing in the creek area to continue this week along with some rough grading west of Grant to Switzer.
